- Telemedicine is the ability to provide interactive healthcare utilizing modern technology and telecommunications. Basically, telemedicine allows patients to visit with physicians live over video for immediate care or capture video/still images and patient data are stored and sent to physicians for diagnosis and follow-up treatment at a later time.

- How OHSU used telemedicine to save a baby's life.
- In June 2011, 7 month-old MaLea Fox woke up with a 102.4 fever. Unable to get the baby to the pediatrician the mother took her child to Seaside hospital. After many tests done on the child they discovered she had a virus but was later released to go home, four hours later the baby was unable to be woken up from her nap and was taken to a second hospital. The baby arrived at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria their the physician called a telemedicine consultation with Oregon Health and Science University. Dr Jennifer Needle, examined the child via a two-way communication system, with a robot-like device. The doctor all the way in Portland was able to see the child's symptoms along with her vital signs and other information. The child was diagnosed with memingococcemia, a life-threatening bacterial infection. Needle persuaded Graber to have a breathing tube inserted in the child before being sent to Portland. Because of fog the helicopter had to return back and try hours later to again head to Portland it took six hours to finally get to Portland. The child is now 3, with both her legs amputated above the knees but has no memory of the trauma.

- A newborn baby was brought back to life at the Silverton Hospital while the doctor was 40 miles away in Portland. Dr. Katie Townes McMann helped resuscitate the baby through a telecommunication robot. The baby's delivery came a month early and there were complications and when Mrs. Bethany Stadeli had to go into emergency surgery she was unsure of what would happen to her baby. James Domst was the doctor helping Bethany the night she was going into labor. Once the baby was delivered, the baby wasn't breathing or moving and was blue, immediately doctors tried resuscitation the baby. The Dr.Domst contacted Dr. Townes McMann and she arrived instantly on a mobile two-way robotic telecommunication machine. With both doctors and nurses working together in few minutes the baby was breathing normally and on his own. Both doctors didn't see or still yet to see the baby coming to show signs of medical problems. Bethany mother of the baby later was shown a video of what all happen the day the doctors saved her baby.
